Objectives of the Course

To teach the basic concepts of testing and assessment, the various ways of testing and evaluating the foreign language proficiency levels of learners the various techniques of assessing language learners speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English, and their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

1.Students can identify basic concepts of measurement and evaluation: sampling, validity, reliability, backwash effect and item analysis.
2.Students can see the relationship between teaching and testing.
3.Students know various measurement purposes and can use alternative measurment tools.
4.Students can identify and explain various approaches in ELT testing.
5.Students know the learning theory of each method or approach, and can identify and construct test items to test four skills.

Various types of tests in ELT (e.g.: proficiency, placement, diagnostic, achievement and aptitude tests, direct vs. indirect testing, discrete point vs. integrative testing, norm referenced vs. criterion referenced testing, objective testing vs. subjective testing, communicative language testing).
