Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge and skills related to scientific research and research projects and to introduce the main types of scientific publications and the essential stages of the scientific research process. The course aims to enable students to conduct literature searches using scientific databases, read and evaluate scientific studies, adopt the principles of research ethics, identify gaps in the literature, and develop a scientifically significant, original, and feasible research problem and project idea.

Course Content

Fundamental concepts related to science, scientific knowledge, scientific research, and research projects; the purposes and main types of scientific research; sources of scientific information and types of scientific publications; sections of a scientific article and the hierarchy of scientific evidence; the scientific research process; research and publication ethics and the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence; scientific databases, keyword selection, and literature search strategies; the structure of the introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and limitations sections of scientific studies; reading, classifying, summarizing, comparing, and recording scientific studies; identifying gaps in the literature; and developing a research problem, a clearly defined research topic, and a feasible project idea.

Name of Lecturer(s)
Learning Outcomes
1.Explain the fundamental concepts related to science, scientific knowledge, scientific research, and research projects, and distinguish the purposes and main types of scientific research.
2.Classify sources of scientific information and types of scientific publications, and explain the main sections of a scientific article and the hierarchy of scientific evidence.
3.Explain the stages of the scientific research process and the relationships among the research topic, research problem, aim, research question, hypothesis, methods, results, discussion, and conclusion.
4.Evaluate the principles of scientific research and publication ethics and distinguish ethical issues related to plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, selective reporting, authorship ethics, protection of personal data, and the responsible use of generative artificial intelligence.
5.Conduct a literature search in scientific databases by using appropriate Turkish and English keywords and search strategies.
6.Examine the introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, and limitations sections of scientific studies and evaluate their main characteristics.
7.Read, classify, summarize, compare, and systematically record the essential information of scientific studies identified through a literature search.
8.Identify gaps, inconsistencies, and unresolved problems in the existing literature and develop a scientifically significant, original, feasible, and clearly defined research problem and project idea.
