Objectives of the Course

Features of academic English language and writing; using definitions, concepts and terms in academic writings; objective and subjective expression; structure and types of academic texts (article, report and scientific abstract etc.); writing claims and propositions (verifying, defending or opposing an idea); formal features of scientific reports and articles; steps of report writing; explanation, discussion, establishing intertextual relationships, showing sources (making references and showing footnotes, creating a bibliography); writing titles, summarizing, writing keywords; ethical principles to be considered in scientific writings; academic text writing practices.

Course Content

English academic language and writing features. Using definitions, concepts and terms in English academic writings. Recognizing the types of English academic texts. Recognizing the steps of writing a scientific report in English and being able to write them. Being able to scan English academic texts and relate them to one's own academic text. Being able to write the title, abstract, keywords, introduction, method, findings, conclusion, discussion and recommendations sections of an English article.
