Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to analyse the dynamic relationship between collective memory and identity construction by examining how historical events, narratives and spaces are remembered, forgotten or reconstructed by individuals and communities. The course aims to critically discuss how collective memory is produced, transmitted and how it functions in the formation of social identities. Students will develop an interdisciplinary approach to memory studies within the framework of concepts such as historiography, commemoration rituals, traumas, spatial memory and cultural representations.

Course Content

The course begins with the basic approaches of social memory theories (Halbwachs, Nora, Assmann, etc.) and examines how memory has become a political, cultural and ideological tool in the historical process. The tension between official historical narratives and counter-memories is analysed through surrogate tools such as monuments, museums, oral history, media and literature. In addition, the relationship between memory and identity is questioned through social traumas (genocides, wars, forced migrations, etc.) and the intergenerational transmission of these events. The role of memory in shaping identity politics is discussed with case studies from Turkey and the world.
