Objectives of the Course

Explain the role played by civil society in the analysis of the structure of modern society and its problems. To comparatively analyze political structures of Western and Turkish societies. To explain the role played by civil society in the development of democracy. To follow the theoretical discussions on the concept of civil society.

Course Content

State and civil society. The rise of capitalism and the bourgeois society. Hegelian concept of civil society. Marx and civil society. Gramsci and historical block concept. Democracy and civil society. Debates on civil society and Ottoman social structure in Turkey. The type of Asian production style. Discussion of the thesis of İdris Küçükömer and Şerif Mardin.
