The purpose of this Development Economics course is to provide master's level students with a comprehensive understanding of the theories, concepts, and empirical evidence related to economic development in both developed and emerging economies. By the end of this course, students will develop an understanding of the multidimensional nature of economic development, the complex interactions between economic, social, political, and environmental factors shaping development outcomes, and the diverse strategies and policies employed to promote sustainable and inclusive development in diverse economic contexts.
This course aims to explore the multifaceted nature of development challenges and the diverse strategies and policies employed to address them. Some key topics to be covered include the following: development theories, development indicators and measurements, and development policies and strategies.
| 1. | Students will have acquired the knowledge, analytical skills, and critical thinking capabilities necessary to engage with theoretical frameworks, empirical evidence, and policy debates in development economics, and contribute to efforts aimed at promoting sustainable and inclusive development in diverse economic contexts. |
| 2. | Students will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of classical, structuralist, neoclassical, and contemporary theories of economic development, and their relevance to real-world development challenges. |
| 3. | Students will be able to critically evaluate various indicators and measures of development and understand their strengths, limitations, and implications for development policy and practice. |
| 4. | Students will critically evaluate the effectiveness of different development policies and strategies. |
| 5. | Students will understand the multidimensional nature of poverty, income inequality, globalization, human capital, institutions, and environmental sustainability, and its causes, consequences, and implications for development. |
