To develop skills about Turkish narrative and theatre

To provide information and knowledge on folk stories, myths, folk theatre, village theatre, Karagoz by exemplifying related Works and studying these works

1.Students will be able to grasp the development and emergence of traditional theatre
2.Evaluate sources about performing arts.
3.Analyze representations of sources performing arts in written work
4.Relate them to todays world.
5.Will be able to explain and interpret traditional theater traditions such as Village Theater Games, Karagöz, Meddahlık, Puppet and Ortaoyun with the basic concepts and approaches in Turkish folk theater

Week 1 - Theoretical
The national character of myths and examples.
Week 2 - Theoretical
The transition from the myts into folk stories; change in social structure and examples.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Kitab-ı Dede Korkut; Korkut Ata and introduction to folk tradition.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Evaluating folk traditions based on structure, funnction and form
Week 5 - Theoretical
Examples of folk stories, Koroglu, Battal Gazi and stories of heroism.
Week 6 - Theoretical
The construction of love in folk stories such as Kerem & Aslı, Aşık Garip, Tahir Zühre, Ferhat & Sirin, etc.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Laughter and its functions in folk culture; on laughter.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Studying jokes, the functions and structure; the analysis of examples.
Week 9 - Theoretical
The concepts of folk theatre and village theatre.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Examples of village theatre and people’s theatre.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Basic knowledge about Karagöz and shadow theatre.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Examples and analyses of Karagöz and shadow theatre.

Basic knowledge about ‘orta oyunu’

Examples and analyses of orta oyunu.
