Objectives of the Course

To introduce 'science of signs' (Semiotics) to the students and to help them gain basic knowledge of distinguished fields of application.

Course Content

Basic concepts and principles of semiotics-which developed in the 20th century at a great pace- and distinguished fields of application.

1.Students will gain the skills of reading, comprehension and interpretation of signs.
2.Students will know contemporary semiotics theories.
3.Students will learn the basic concepts of semiotics.
4.Students will know different practice areas of semiotics.
5.Will be able to evaluate the evolution of semiotics by establishing a connection between semiotics and other disciplines of social sciences and discuss semiotic applications in different fields.

Week 1 - Theoretical
History of semiotics, the first application fields, the birth of linguistic semiotics and its pioneers (Ferdinand de Saussure ve Charles Sanders Peirce); the concepts of “language” and “sign” as a sign system.

The second generation inspirators of continental semiotics (Emile Benveniste, Louis Hjelmslev ve Vladimir Propp)
