Objectives of the Course

The course "History of Contemporary Ottoman Diplomacy" aims to examine Ottoman foreign policy after the French Revolution by taking the roles of the institutions and actors into account.

Course Content

In this course, the terms of diplomacy and foreign policy will be examined and the structure and features of Ottoman State will be revealed with respect to religious, cultural, societal, political and administrative factors. Also, these factors will be discussed in terms of their contributions to Ottoman’s foundation and advancement. Also, the role that diplomacy played in the eras of foundation and advancement will be shown and the differences in the diplomatic understanding in the periods of foundation, advancement, stagnation, and collapse will be held in lights of different cases. In this context, Ottoman State’s shift to permanent diplomacy and foundations of permanent embassies will be discussed. Besides, the impact of Babıali on the Ottoman diplomacy and Sultan Abdulhamid II era’s foreign policy and the impact of Ottoman pashas on the diplomacy will be taken into consideration regarding the developments of 19th century in important regions such as Egypt, Balkan and Crete and Ottoman international relations with Russia, Britain, France and Germany. To have a broader view, Treaties of Paris, Ayestefanos and Berlin will be discussed.
