Objectives of the Course

• Investigating engineering methods to provide the highest-level safety for vehicles leaving roadway for any reason • Providing information on safe roadside design phases • Teaching how the crash tests used to ensure roadside safety in the world • Providing the implementation details of road restraint systems, such as guardrails, crash cushions and transition guardrails.

Course Content

This course is intended to explain all necessary engineering measures to increase the safety of vehicle passengers entering the roadside, determine what can be done to reduce the impact severity, present detailed information about engineering precautions, such as guardrails and crash cushions, explaining crash tests and the current crash test standards in the world, investigating the roadside safety issues with examples from Turkey and around the world.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to roadside safety; the definition of roadside safety, headings and the details of the subject
Week 2 - Theoretical
Roadside accidents; road accident statistical information, the details of the roadside accidents
Week 3 - Theoretical
Roadside safety design; to illustrate the design steps in roadside safety with examples
Week 4 - Theoretical
Literature survey of roadside safety; analysis of different literature reviews and discussion of outstanding details by students.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Clean roadside; introducing the concept of clean roadside, examining samples by graphs
Week 6 - Theoretical
Breakaway poles; the use of breakaway pole technology and use of the other design steps in roadside safety
Week 7 - Theoretical
Guardrails; introduction to the guardrails, explanation of usage details and introducing features
Week 8 - Theoretical
The impact of the vehicle crash tests on the roadside safety, details of the crash test standards
Week 9 - Theoretical
Details of crash test standards in the US and Europe.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Crash tests in the EU norms; detailed examination crash test standard EN1317 used in the European Union and Turkey.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Guardrail EN1317-2 impact tests; investigation of guardrails according to crash tests and design details
Week 12 - Theoretical
EN1317-3, EN1317-4, EN1317-5, investigation of energy absorbing crash cushions, guardrail transitions and end terminals.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Roadside safety in Turkey, research towards providing roadside safety in Turkey
