Objectives of the Course

With this course, it is aimed that the students have a general knowledge about the changing and unchanging social and cultural structure of Turkey from past to present, so that they can be aware of and evaluate the social dynamics of our country.

Course Content

It is an incomplete approach to evaluate the structure of a society only in the context of the current situation and conditions. Because there is a continuous line in the history of every society. In this context, in order to understand the social structure of Turkey, first of all, it is necessary to touch on the effects of the Ottoman legacy. Reflections of the economic, political, cultural and social structure of the Ottoman Empire on the Republic of Turkey, the effects of Ottoman modernization, the social structure created by the revolutions in the ideal of creating a new society, democratization efforts and attempts to transition to multi-party life, 1950 elections and DP government, 1950' Migration and urbanization problems in Turkey, the process leading to the 1960 military coup, the 1961 Constitution and its effects on political and social life, the ideological politics in Turkey in the 1960s and 1970s, the second blow to democracy and the 1971 Memorandum, the January 24 decisions and the process leading to the 1980 military coup, The effects of the economic change in the 1980s on the social structure, the social general view of Turkey in the 1990s under the shadow of corruption and bribery, and Turkey in the 2000s and Turkey in the globalizing world constitute the content of this course.
