Objectives of the Course

The history of the press in Turkey will be examined, from the first newspapers published in the Ottoman Empire to the situation of the Turkish press after the declaration of the Republic. Newspapers and prominent journalists of the period will be examined.

Course Content

Development of the printing house and the printing house in the world, the first printing houses in Turkey: Minority printing houses and Turkish printing houses, press and publication before the Tanzimat, foreign newspapers, press and publication in the Tanzimat period, the Press Regulation, the press in the despotism period, the first press strike, Young Turk newspapers, the press in the War of Independence period and publication: Istanbul and Anatolian press, Anadolu Agency, Full freedom of the press: II. Newspapers and magazines during the Constitutional Monarchy period, the Press Law and the changes made on it, press and publication movements during the Republic period: Takrir-i Sükun, Independence Courts, 1931 Press and Penal Laws, Single Party Period, Restrictions on the Press, 1939-1945 II. Examining the reflections of the World War and the political events of the period on the press through newspaper examples, Turkish Journalism in the 1946-1950 period, Turkish Journalism in the 1950-1960 period and the impact of DP on the press.

1.Will be able to understand the emergence of the first daily newspapers in Europe.
2.Will be able to identify the emergence of the press in the Ottoman Empire and its role in the modernization/democratization process.
3.Understanding the dominant role of the press in the Armistice and War of Independence process
4.Determine the impact of the press on the adoption of the revolution and laws of the Ataturk period.
5.The relationship between political power and the press after 1950 can be evaluated.
