Objectives of the Course

The aim of the course is to get the necessary information on the cities as the basic form of the civilisation and to be familiar with the cities of the late Ottoman Empire by examining the basic sources of it.

Course Content

In this course, the sources of the cities of the late Ottoman period, the notions such as the Turkish city, the Islamic city and the European city, their foundings, administration, demographic and the ethnic structures of them and the general characteristics of the late Ottoman cities by taking the important changes with the effect of modernisation will be analysed.

4.Compare the city governance between pre-Tanzimat and the afterwards.
5.To be able to comprehend the differences between the Ottoman city before and after Tanzimat.
