Following the 1968 student movements environmental movements has emerged widely in the US and Western Europ. Soon after they bacame one of the main social movements in all Western countriese. In this course we will be examining the emerge of environmentalist philosophy, especially, since the early 1970s they have transformed in to social and since 1980s then they have been represented in national parliaments. The fact that, in recent years, in Turkey too, environmentalist concerns are increasingly coming up to surface and this is an indication of the potential growth of environmentalist movements in Turkey. In this course the environmental movements and their transformative stages will be examined. For doing so we will chose some of global and local environmentalist movements and examine their social, cultural and political impacts in societies they in which they florish.
In this course we will be focusing on the emerge of environmentalist ideas, practices and their impacts on the societies in which they thrives. Especially, we will be examining the philosophical roots of green movements back in the 19th century and following it on to the post World War II, most importantly the student movements of 1968. The establishment of green movements in Turkey will be another line of inquiry in this module. Current environmental movements will be considered as case studies to focus. For doing so we will chose some of Turkish environmentalist movements and examine their social, cultural, legal and political impacts.
