Objectives of the Course

To put forward effects of global and neoliberal transformations on education. To analyse and discuss neoliberal politics that including privatization, flexibility and deregulation and deunionization processes and effects of them on education. To analyse the influences of transformations that mentioned above on educational labour process. To discuss the dimensions of marketization and commodification in education.

Course Content

Educational politics of welfare capitalism era before 1980’s. Human Capital paradigm and education. Privatization and marketization politics in education after 1980’s, the increase in private education institutions. Educational labour process in the face of neoliberal transformations, degradation and proletariatization of teacher’s labour. Flexibility of labour. The process of technologication of education and its critics.

Week 3 - Theoretical
Constitutive ideology of Turkish Republic and its reflections on education. Cultivation of Kemalist/secular generations and the role of education.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Liberal developmentalist outreach processes in 1950’s, developmentalist ideology and education, human capital paradigm, Cultivation of technocrat and bureaucrat generations as a function of education.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Education and educational politics in neoliberal era at 1980’s
Week 6 - Theoretical
Privatization in education, private schools, private tutorial colleges and other private educational establishments.

The conditions of public education, the segregation of education in terms of class.

Commodification of education, market oriented education and neoliberal rhetoric in education.
