Objectives of the Course

Since 1990s the concepts of identity and belonging has been used in many areas within the social sciences. Especially since last ten years it has been widely used by anthropology, sociology, psychology and social psychology extensively. The aim of this course is investigate the sociocultural and political implications of such an important concepts. For doing this we will start with the definitions and discourses used to use in the past as well as we will explore the contemporary sociological theories of identity and belonging. We will use various contemporary identity based social movements as well.

Course Content

The power of identity, contemporary theories of identity (Giddens, Bauman, Castells); Collective identity, religious identity, cultural identity; Debates on ethnic identity; Debates on I and identity in modern and post-industrial societies; Relations with nation and nationalization; Network societies and identity; Identity and new social movements theories; Identity and religious movements.

Learning Outcomes
1.Grasp the main concepts, themes and debate that associated with concepts of identity and belonging;
2.To have an advanced knowledge of the debate and main theoretical issues of the concepts of identity and belonging religion;
3.Investigate and understand the significant changes occurred in areas of the concepts of identity and belonging in the last twenty years and to grasp what these changes mean for them at the beginning of the 21th century;
4.Grasp the changing nature and dynamics of concepts of identity and belonging and to investigate how they will affect the future of sociocultural and political life in Turkey;
5.While investigating the concepts of identity and belonging to show an ability to critically evaluate issues at hand and to have an objective approach;
