The aim of this course is to provide students with a scientific understanding of the fundamental principles of animal behaviour and the concept of animal welfare. It also aims to enable students to evaluate the physiological, environmental, and management factors affecting animal behaviour, apply animal welfare assessment criteria, and recognize the importance of animal welfare in sustainable livestock production.
This course covers the basic concepts of animal behaviour, the physiological and genetic basis of behaviour, innate and learned behaviours, social behaviour, animal communication, stress and behavioural disorders, the concept of animal welfare, the Five Freedoms, animal welfare assessment methods, welfare practices in farm animals, welfare during transportation and pre-slaughter handling, ethical principles and legal regulations related to animal welfare, and current approaches to improving animal welfare.
