Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the structure, functioning and importance of grassland and rangeland ecosystems in livestock production; to recognize major grassland and rangeland plant species through their fundamental characteristics; to evaluate plant composition, grazing, rangeland management, range improvement and rehabilitation practices from an integrated perspective; and to develop the knowledge and awareness required for the sustainable use and management of grassland and rangeland resources in animal production.

Course Content

This course covers the concepts, ecological characteristics and importance of grasslands and rangelands in livestock production; the structure and functioning of grassland and rangeland ecosystems; the general characteristics and classification of grassland and rangeland plants; major grass, legume and other important forage species; plant composition, forage yield and quality; the formation, development and degradation of grasslands and rangelands; grazing principles; rangeland management, rehabilitation and improvement practices; grassland quality assessment; and the current status, challenges and sustainable management of grassland and rangeland resources in Türkiye.
