Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with fundamental knowledge of the biological and anatomical characteristics of poultry, poultry breeds and commercial hybrids, reproductive characteristics, production systems, housing conditions, and poultry-house equipment. The course also aims to enable students to plan chick and pullet rearing, broiler, laying-hen, and turkey production processes and to evaluate lighting, management, health, animal welfare, transportation, and slaughter practices in accordance with poultry production principles.

Course Content

The course covers the economic importance and products of poultry, body structure, breeds and commercial hybrids, the biological structure of the egg, and reproduction in poultry. It also addresses poultry production systems, poultry-house types and equipment, lighting management, chick and pullet rearing techniques, broiler production, commercial laying-hen production, and turkey production. The selection of animal stock, housing and management conditions, flock health, animal welfare, transportation, and pre-slaughter practices are also examined.

1.Explains the body structure, basic anatomical characteristics, reproductive system, breeds, and commercial hybrids of poultry.
2.Determines appropriate production systems, poultry-house types, equipment, and environmental control conditions according to poultry species and production purpose.
3.Plans chick and pullet rearing processes in terms of temperature, ventilation, lighting, management, and flock development.
4.Evaluates management practices and performance records in broiler, commercial laying-hen, and turkey production.
5.Applies appropriate methods related to flock health, biosecurity, animal welfare, transportation, and pre-slaughter practices in poultry production.

External characteristics, body structure, and basic anatomy of poultry

Chicken breeds, commercial hybrids, and the biological structure of the egg
Week 4 - Theoretical
Reproductive systems, mating, fertilisation, and egg formation in poultry
Week 5 - Theoretical
Poultry production systems, poultry-house types, and poultry-house equipment
Week 6 - Theoretical
Temperature, humidity, ventilation, and lighting management in poultry houses

Chick placement, post-hatch management, and brooding techniques

Pullet rearing, flock development, body-weight monitoring, and flock uniformity
