Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with theoretical knowledge in the basic principles of animal breeding, genetic concepts, selection methods, breeding systems, and breeding programs. Students are expected to understand genetic variation in different species (cattle, sheep, goats, buffalo, poultry, etc.), evaluate breeding selection criteria, and develop breeding strategies to achieve genetic improvement at the herd level.

Course Content

Introduction to animal breeding and basic concepts. Population genetics and genetic variation. Heritability and repeatability. Selection methods and selection response. Criteria used in breeding selection. Breeding systems. Inbreeding and heterosis. Methods for estimating breeding value. Planning and implementation of breeding programs. Performance tests and pedigree records. Modern breeding methods and genomic selection.
