Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the concepts of physical activity, exercise, and public health; and to equip them with the practical competence to develop, implement, and manage social/corporate awareness projects, mass sporting events, and health communication strategies that promote active lifestyles by relating these concepts to the discipline of Public Relations and Advertising.

Course Content

The topic encompasses the relationship between physical activity, sports, and public health; the risks of sedentary lifestyles and awareness of active living; corporate wellness programs and office exercises; campaign and event management processes (planning, budgeting, sponsorship, risk management) with a physical activity theme in public relations; and the use of digital technologies and wearable devices in health communication, along with ethical/legal boundaries.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
The terminology of physical activity, exercise, and mobility concepts, and their importance in the public relations sector are examined; during the practical session, an analysis of inactivity rates and current awareness levels in society is conducted, and project groups are formed.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
The historical and societal importance of physical activity on public health and global active lifestyle movements are presented; during the practical session, successful active lifestyle PR campaigns of world-renowned brands or sports ministries are analyzed using the case study method.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
The risks of sedentary work life, corporate wellness, and office exercise concepts are discussed; during the practical session, a draft plan for a "Corporate Movement and Health Day" event to increase mobility for a company's employees is designed.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies and social benefit models focused on physical activity in the context of health communication are discussed; during the practical session, the conceptual foundations of a CSR project to spread awareness of movement in society for a selected brand are developed.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Project management, target audience analysis, and budgeting principles for mass physical activity events (public runs, bike tours, etc.) are taught; during the application session, project groups prepare a cost item matrix and target audience segmentation for their own designed mass event.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Copywriting, motivational message strategies, and language and tone selection in active lifestyle and sports communication are covered; during the application session, creative campaign slogans are produced for projects, press releases are written, and social media content plans (creative briefs) are developed.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Gamification mechanics in digital tools used for tracking physical activity, wearable technologies (smartwatches), and mobile health applications are explained; during the application session, scenarios are designed on how to integrate digital activity applications into a PR campaign.
Week 8 - Intermediate Exam
A midterm exam is administered; following the exam, during the application session, the first-term drafts prepared by the project groups (active lifestyle campaign idea, target audience, and budget) are presented to the board for academic feedback.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Professional ethical principles in sports and health communication, awareness of anti-doping measures, legal regulations, and sponsorship law are examined; during the practical session, potential crisis scenarios that may be encountered in sports events are simulated, and crisis communication plans are prepared.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Active Cities, the management of outdoor sports areas, and sports-focused urban marketing concepts are discussed; during the practical session, an event strategy is developed for a local government to encourage public physical activity in parks and open spaces.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Risk management, logistical planning, participant safety, and first aid coordination in large-scale sports and walking operations are explained; during the practical session, an operational risk map of the designed event is created, and emergency "Plan B" flowcharts are drawn.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Adapted physical activity design and social inclusion policies for special groups such as children, the elderly, and disadvantaged individuals are presented; during the practical session, a timeline for an accessible mobility project targeting these groups is
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Measuring the success of physical activity campaigns, participation rates, media reach analyses, and social impact measurement methods are covered; during the practical session, the impact analysis methodology of the prepared projects is determined and a success indicator (KPI) matrix is ??written.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Sustainable sports events (green events), environmentally friendly active living spaces, and the future of health communication are summarized; during the practical session, the final checks of the "Integrated Physical Activity and Health Communication Project" files prepared throughout the semester and the final presentation rehearsal are conducted.
