Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts, historical development, institutional structures, and economic and political characteristics of media and communication systems. It also aims to develop students’ ability to comparatively evaluate traditional and digital media systems. Furthermore, the course enables students to analyze the media system in Türkiye, media ownership and financing structures, communication policies, digital platforms, and contemporary media issues from the perspective of public relations and corporate communication.

Course Content

The course covers the concepts of communication and media, the historical development of media systems, print media, radio, television, cinema, news agencies, digital and social media systems, news production processes, organizational structures of media organizations, media economics and ownership, normative theories of the media, comparative media systems, the media system in Türkiye, media law and ethics, digital platforms, algorithms, artificial intelligence, disinformation, and media literacy.

2.Explains the historical development and fundamental functions of media and communication systems.
3.Compares the production, distribution, and organizational structures of print, audiovisual, and digital media systems.
4.Evaluates the relationship between media organizations and public relations departments, as well as news production processes.
5.Explains the effects of digitalization, convergence, platformization, algorithms, and artificial intelligence on media systems.
6.Evaluates issues related to media ethics, freedom of expression, social responsibility, disinformation, and media literacy.
