Objectives of the Course

To establish a foundation in general chemical concepts and create a chemistry background suitable for the programs. To gain knowledge about the components of food and to develop a foundation for some general chemical analyses.

Course Content

The structure of matter, the concept of the mole and chemical calculations, the concepts of acids and bases, the periodic table and chemical bonds, and solutions. Biomolecules, macromolecules, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, enzymes, and some organic compounds that are the basic components of living organisms.

Molecules, molecular structure, the concept of the mole, and molar mass.

The concept of the mole in chemical calculations (stoichiometry) and chemical reaction equations.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Solutions and solution environments; the concept of concentration and types of concentration.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Preparation of aqueous and alcoholic solutions; concentration and dilution calculations.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Periodic table and periodic properties
Week 7 - Theoretical
Chemical bonds and intermolecular interactions
Week 8 - Intermediate Exam
Gases; boiling point, vapor pressure and atmospheric pressure
Week 9 - Theoretical
Concepts of acids and bases; acid-base reactions and calculations.
Week 10 - Theoretical
The concept of pH, buffer systems, and chemical (laboratory) equipment.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Titration and titration calculations; water and its chemical significance.

Organic compounds: definition and classification
