Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to teach students about Turkey’s natural, historical and cultural tourism assets, organised by geographical region. The objective is for students to understand the tourist attractions, alternative forms of tourism and the relationship between tourism and geography in Turkey’s seven geographical regions, enabling them to evaluate these destinations from a sectoral and professional perspective.

Course Content

The course begins by examining the fundamental concepts of tourism geography and the impact of Turkey’s geopolitical position on tourism. It then goes on to examine in detail the natural beauty, ancient cities, places of worship and cultural fabric of the Marmara, Aegean, Mediterranean, Central Anatolia, Black Sea, Eastern Anatolia and South-Eastern Anatolia regions, in that order. In the following weeks, the course covers not only coastal tourism but also alternative forms of tourism such as thermal, winter, highland, gastronomic and eco-tourism, as well as Turkey’s national parks and approaches to sustainable tourism.
