Objectives of the Course

The primary objective of this course is to introduce the general characteristics of diseases, pests, and weeds that cause yield and quality losses in cultivated crops, and to provide fundamental knowledge about the damage they cause as well as the basic methods used for their management.

Course Content

This course covers the importance of plant pathology, the concept of plant diseases, disease symptoms, and both abiotic and biotic plant diseases. Within the scope of biotic diseases, fundamental knowledge is provided on the disease triangle, the disease cycle, and the organisms responsible for causing plant diseases. In addition, the course introduces the identification of plant pests, their biological characteristics, the types of damage they cause, and the basic methods used for their management. The course content also includes fundamental information on the characteristics of weeds and the methods used for their control. Furthermore, the recommended approaches for the management of plant diseases, pests, and weeds in organic agriculture are explained through illustrative examples

Explanation of the basic terminology used in plant protection, definition of plant pathology, and the concepts and stages of plant diseases.

Classification of plant diseases and identification of disease symptoms (symptoms).
Week 4 - Theoretical
Stages of disease development; general characteristics of bacteria, the diseases they cause, and their symptoms.
Week 5 - Theoretical
General characteristics and classification of fungi.
Week 6 - Theoretical
General characteristics of plant viruses, the diseases they cause, and the associated symptoms.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Epidemiology of plant diseases and the factors affecting disease development.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Methods of plant disease management and disease control practices used in organic agriculture
Week 9 - Theoretical
Importance and harmful effects of weeds in agricultural production
Week 10 - Theoretical
Weed management methods and weed control practices used in organic agriculture.
Week 11 - Theoretical
General characteristics of insects, their beneficial and harmful roles, and external morphology.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Insect anatomy; the structure and functions of internal organs, including the muscular, digestive, nervous, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems, as well as the structure and functions of sensory organs.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Insect reproduction, development, metamorphosis, and ecology; classification of insects (insect orders and their general characteristics).
Week 14 - Theoretical
Methods of insect pest management and pest control practices used in organic agriculture.
