Objectives of the Course

The Art and Ethics course aims to enable students to question, evaluate, and critically interpret ethical issues arising in the production, presentation, and reception processes of art. This course aims to analyze the ethical obligations of the artist, the relationship of the artwork to society, and the ethical responsibility of the viewer by establishing a balance between artistic freedom of expression and social responsibility. Furthermore, by examining ethical discussions related to art through historical and contemporary examples, it encourages students to understand the ethical dimension of art in a multifaceted way.

Course Content

This course examines the relationship between art and ethics from a multifaceted perspective. Philosophical and ethical discussions on the nature, purpose, and social role of art are explored. The ethical responsibilities of artists in the creative process, the tension between freedom of expression and ethical boundaries, censorship, cultural appropriation, gender, the environment, animal rights, war, and politics are all discussed. Furthermore, the ethical roles of art institutions (museums, galleries, curators) are examined through examples from contemporary art practices. Students gain a deep understanding of the ethical dimension of art by analyzing both theoretical texts and artistic examples.
