The aim of this course is to provide students with knowledge of urban environmental renewal, urban design principles, and the physical, social, economic, and environmental transformation processes occurring within urban environments. The course focuses on urban deterioration processes, renewal and adaptive reuse approaches, the contribution of recreational areas to urban quality of life, conservation of historic environments, and strategies for creating sustainable urban environments, thereby enhancing students’ analytical and evaluative skills regarding urban spaces.
This course examines the concept of the city, the historical development of urban design, and its role within planning processes. Urban environmental problems, urban deterioration processes, and environmental renewal approaches are discussed, while applications related to the regeneration of public open spaces, recreational areas, waterfronts, historic environments, and former industrial sites are evaluated. Furthermore, sustainable cities, green infrastructure systems, and contemporary urban environmental renewal projects are analyzed through national and international case studies.
