Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of garden art, design approaches, and spatial characteristics created by different civilizations and cultures throughout the world. The course aims to develop an understanding of the cultural, aesthetic, and environmental dimensions of garden design by evaluating garden traditions that emerged in various geographical regions from ancient times to the present day.

Course Content

This course examines the historical development of garden art through garden traditions created by different civilizations and cultures around the world. The course covers a wide range of garden styles, from Ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Persian, Greek, and Roman gardens to Islamic, Chinese, Japanese, Renaissance, Baroque, English Landscape, and modern gardens. Within each topic, representative garden examples reflecting the characteristic features of the period are analyzed through plans, photographs, and design evaluations. Spatial organizations, design principles, planting and structural elements, as well as cultural and aesthetic approaches, are comparatively examined.
