Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to introduce students to biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) agents causing plant diseases, and to teach the processes of disease occurrence, development, and diagnosis. Additionally, it aims to enable students to effectively apply cultural, physical, biological, and restricted chemical management methods permitted in organic agriculture against diseases causing economic damage in fruits, vegetables, and field crops at both theoretical and practical levels, in accordance with organic farming principles and regulations.

Course Content

General definition of plant protection and plant pathology; abiotic and biotic disease agents; mechanisms of disease occurrence, development processes, and plant symptoms. Important fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases observed in fruits, vegetables, and field crops, and their management methods in organic agriculture. Practical applications include field observations, preparation of diseased plant materials, preparation of Bordeaux mixture, application of physical and biological preparations, and solarization techniques.

Learning Outcomes
1.Identify, distinguish, and classify biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) disease agents affecting plants under field conditions.
2.Monitor the occurrence, infection, and dissemination processes (symptoms) of plant diseases, and apply accurate diagnostic methods in laboratory and field environments.
3.Plan environmentally sensitive plant disease management programs in compliance with organic agriculture regulations and occupational health and safety principles.
4.Prepare and implement cultural, physical (solarization, etc.), biological preparation, and organic chemical (Bordeaux mixture, etc.) management methods permitted against plant diseases in organic production.
5.Analyze problems caused by plant diseases encountered in the field, develop practical solution proposals through teamwork, and properly prepare diagnostic materials for examination.

Abiotic (non-living) disease agents in plants (nutrient deficiencies, climatic factors, etc.) / Examination of damages caused by abiotic agents in the field
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Biotic (living) disease agents in plants (Fungi, bacteria, viruses, and viroids) / Preparation of materials related to living disease agents
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Disease occurrence, definition, inoculation, and infection processes in plants / Examination of biotic disease agents on plants

Disease development, epidemiology, and dissemination mechanisms in plants / Monitoring disease development on plants and material preparation
