In accordance with the principles and regulations of organic farming, this course focuses on the theoretical and practical teaching of plant pest identification, the determination of damage patterns, and the use of cultural, mechanical, biotechnical, and biological control methods as alternatives to synthetic chemicals. The aim is for students to acquire the skills to manage plant health in organic production areas by developing environmentally friendly and sustainable protection strategies.
The course covers the identification of plant pests, the assessment of damage patterns, and alternative control methods that do not harm the agroecosystem, within the framework of the organic farming regulations. The core content of the course comprises the theoretical principles of cultural control measures, mechanical methods, biotechnical traps, biological control agents (predators, parasitoids, and entomopathogens), plant extracts, and permitted mineral compounds in organic farming, along with their practical application under laboratory and field conditions.
| 1. | Explains the legal regulations, restrictions, and core philosophy of plant health and pest management in organic farming. |
| 2. | Identifies the general biology and morphological characteristics of major insects, mites, nematodes, and stored product pests in organic fields. |
| 3. | Diagnoses characteristic pest damages in orchards, vineyards, and vegetable fields, and perform Economic Injury Level (EIL) analysis. |
| 4. | Prepares, deploys, and monitors biotechnical systems (pheromones, colored sticky traps, and light traps) according to target pest populations. |
| 5. | Evaluates the impacts of synthetic pesticides on agroecosystems and plan cultural practices, mechanical barriers, or soil solarization in the field. |
| 6. | Distinguishes between predator and parasitoid species involved in biological control; and implement appropriate habitat management to protect and support these natural enemies in nature. |
| 7. | Explains the modes of action of microbial control agents (entomopathogenic bacteria, entomopathogenic fungi, viruses, and nematodes) and apply biopesticides based on precise dosage calculations. |
| 8. | Formulates organic-approved mineral substances (sulfur, copper, potassium soap) and botanical extracts (neem, garlic macerations, essential oils) in laboratory conditions to write organic pest control prescriptions. |
