Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental biological, genetic, and environmental principles of animal breeding and husbandry at a theoretical level. The course covers the domestication process, farm animal species and breeds, record-keeping systems, animal improvement, selection, breeding methods, reproduction, fertility management, and environmental adaptation mechanisms, aiming to teach the core principles of rational and sustainable animal production.

Course Content

Introduction to animal breeding, current status of livestock production in the world and Turkey. History of domestication, animal species, the concept of breed, and classification of breeds. Theoretical principles of types of livestock enterprises and record-keeping systems used in breeding farms. Animal breeding, selection, and mating methods. Reproductive physiology, fertility parameters, and factors affecting fertility in farm animals. The concept of environment in livestock production, climatic factors, and adaptation mechanisms of farm animals to the environment.

Learning Outcomes
1.Analyze global and national livestock production data, and define the domestication process, farm animal species, and major breeds of economic importance.
2.Explain the theoretical principles and importance of performance, reproduction, and pedigree record-keeping systems in livestock breeding farms.
3.Explain the basic principles of animal improvement, and theoretically compare selection and breeding methods (inbreeding, crossbreeding, etc.).
4.Evaluate reproductive cycles, fertility criteria, and genetic and environmental factors affecting fertility in farm animals from a herd management perspective.
5.Define the concept of environment and stress factors in livestock production, and theoretically analyze the adaptation mechanisms of animals to the environment.

Introduction to animal breeding, scope of the course, and basic concepts
Week 2 - Theoretical
Current status, future, and economic analysis of livestock production in the world and Turkey
Week 3 - Theoretical
History and processes of domestication, and its morphological/physiological effects on animals
Week 4 - Theoretical
Farm animal species, their position in the zoological system, and the concept of breed (classification of breeds)
Week 5 - Theoretical
Types of livestock enterprises (intensive, extensive, integrated, family farming, etc.)
Week 6 - Theoretical
Records used in breeding enterprises: Pedigree, performance, reproduction, and health records
Week 7 - Theoretical
Introduction to animal genetics and breeding, heritability, variance components, and genetic gain concepts
Week 8 - Theoretical
Selection methods (individual, pedigree, family selection, etc.) and breeding methods / Midterm Exam
Week 9 - Theoretical
Fundamental breeding methods used in livestock: Purebreeding and types of crossbreeding
Week 10 - Theoretical
Reproductive physiology, reproductive cycles, and fertility parameters in farm animals
Week 11 - Theoretical
Genetic, anatomical, hormonal, and managerial factors affecting fertility

The concept of environment in livestock production, environmental elements (macro and microclimate), and its importance
