Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to provide students with the ability to analyze and manage livestock production processes within the framework of sustainability principles. The course aims to develop environmentally friendly, ethical, and economically viable animal production models by covering the problems associated with intensive farming, the impacts of environmental stress factors on productivity, the conservation of indigenous animal genetic resources, and animal health and welfare standards.

Course Content

Current status of livestock production in the world and Turkey, and types of livestock enterprises; the concept of sustainability and its implications in animal production. Environmental stress factors and conservation of indigenous animal genetic resources within the scope of biodiversity. Structural challenges of intensive (industrial) farming and physiological/metabolic problems observed in high-yielding animals. Relationship between sustainable livestock production, herd health, animal welfare, sustainable feed resources, eco-friendly housing systems, and environmental health.

1.Define the concept of sustainability and structurally analyze global and national livestock production data and enterprise types.
2.Evaluate the impacts of climatic and environmental stress factors on the physiology and productivity of farm animals.
3.Explain the importance of indigenous animal genetic resources in terms of biodiversity and comprehend strategies for their conservation.
4.Diagnose metabolic, reproductive, and structural problems caused by intensive industrial farming and single-trait selection for high yield.
5.Plan animal health management, welfare, eco-friendly housing design, sustainable feed production, and environmental health applications in line with sustainable livestock principles.
