Objectives of the Course

The aim is to teach the general characteristics of biotic (fungal, bacterial, viral, etc.) and abiotic (non-living) disease agents and weeds that cause economic damage to medicinal and aromatic plants; the symptoms, biological cycles, and damage patterns of these agents on host plants; and the morphology, biology, and damage patterns of insects, mites, and other animal pests that cause economic losses. Within the framework of Integrated Crop Management (IPM) principles, the goal is to develop the ability to plan sustainable/integrated control methods against these diseases, pests, and weeds using a holistic approach, in accordance with cultural, biological, physical, and organic farming regulations, by conducting a comparative analysis of alternative and sustainable control methods.

Course Content

The course covers the fundamental principles of plant pathology and the components of the disease triangle; classification of abiotic and biotic disease agents; life cycle, symptomatology, and diagnostic methods in plant diseases; weed biology and its effects on plant production; morphology, biology, and damage patterns of insects, mites, and other animal pests causing significant economic losses in medicinal and aromatic plants; integrated pest management (IPM) strategies; and specific diseases, pests, and control methods observed in important medicinal and aromatic plants such as roses, sage, basil, mint, thyme, anise, and hops.

Learning Outcomes
1.Competence in classifying biotic and abiotic factors causing disease in medicinal and aromatic plants, and describing their biological and physiological characteristics.
2.Ability to accurately diagnose plant diseases and pests by analyzing their macroscopic signs (symptoms) in the field and laboratory.
3.Ability to comparatively select alternative and sustainable methods in disease, pest, and weed control in accordance with environmental awareness.
4.Ability to implement quality standard-maintaining management strategies against diseases and pests specific to roses, sage, basil, mint, thyme, anise, and hops.
5.Ability to analyze field-specific professional problems, develop solutions, and manage processes by taking responsibility in individual or team work.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
The Importance of Plant Diseases and Abiotic Disease Agents Macro effects of plant health in agricultural production, disease triangle components and economic loss analyses; effects of temperature, light, humidity extremes, nutrient deficiencies/excesses, and air pollution on plant physiology and abiotic diagnostic criteria.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Living (Biotic) Disease Agents Classification of fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens that cause infections in medicinal and aromatic plants; morphological structures, taxonomic characteristics, epidemiology, and entry routes into plant tissues of pathogens.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Disease Development, Progression and Symptoms (Symptomatology) in Plants The disease cycle and processes consisting of inoculation, penetration, infection, fruiting and overwintering stages; laboratory and field-scale analysis of macroscopic and microscopic symptoms such as wilting, spotting, rot, tumors and mosaics occurring in the host plant.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
General Control Methods for Disease Agents and Weeds Legal (quarantine), cultural, physical, biological and chemical control methods within the scope of integrated pest management (IPM); biology of dominant weeds that pose a problem in production areas, the product losses they cause and sustainable management strategies.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Diseases and Control of Roses (Rosa sp.) and Sage (Salvia sp.) Powdery mildew (Podosphaera pannosa), black spot and rust diseases causing economic damage in rose production; specific agents causing root rot and leaf spots in sage; control programs to maintain quality standards of active ingredients.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Diseases and Control of Basil (Ocimum basilicum) and Mint (Mentha sp.) Epidemiology of Basil Downy Mildew (Peronospora belbahrii) and Fusarium wilt, which cause high yield losses in basil; Mint Rust (Puccinia menthae) disease seen in mint; sustainable management models to protect essential oil quality.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Diseases and Integrated Management of Thyme (Thymus sp.), Anise (Pimpinella anisum) and Hops (Humulus lupulus) Root rot in thyme; downy mildew (Pseudoperonospora humuli), leaf spot and powdery mildew diseases with high economic damage in anise and hops; fungal contaminations and protective measures that reduce quality in post-harvest storage and packaging.
