Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the fundamental concepts, components, and determinants of health literacy; to develop their ability to effectively support individuals' access, understanding, and use of health information by utilizing health communication processes; to enable them to assess the importance of health literacy in different populations such as women, children, mental health, chronic diseases, and vulnerable groups; to understand the role of health literacy in health promotion and public health; and to train health professionals who can plan appropriate education and intervention approaches to improve health literacy at the individual, family, and community levels.

Course Content

This course includes the following topics: Health Literacy, Basic Concepts, Importance of Health Literacy and Influencing Factors, Communication in Healthcare and Health Literacy, Women's Health and Health Literacy, Child Health and Health Literacy, Mental Health and Health Literacy, Environmental Health and Health Literacy, Midterm Exam - Environmental Health and Health Literacy, Health Promotion and Health Literacy, Chronic Diseases and Health Literacy, Vulnerable Groups and Health Literacy, Health Literacy Research in the World and in Türkiye, Importance of Health Literacy from a Public Health Perspective, and Improving Health Literacy.

Learning Outcomes
1.This course explains the fundamental concepts, components, and place of health literacy within the health system.
2.It analyzes the individual, social, and environmental factors influencing health literacy and their impact on health outcomes.
3.IIt supports individuals' ability to access, understand, and use health information using health communication processes.
4.It evaluates the role of health literacy in the context of women, children, mental health, chronic diseases, and vulnerable groups.
5.Interprets national and international research on health literacy and relates its findings to professional practices.
6.Explains the importance of health literacy within the framework of health promotion and public health approaches.
7.Develops educational and intervention recommendations to improve health literacy at the individual, family, and community levels.
