Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to gain basic knowledge of using geographic information technologies in real estate portfolio management, location analysis, parcel inquiry, and valuation processes.

The course covers geographic information, maps, GIS, spatial data, coordinate systems, web maps, QGIS, parcel inquiry, location analysis, thematic maps, remote sensing, mobile maps, and AI-supported mapping applications.

5.The student prepares a simple real estate map using sample portfolio or neighborhood data.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to Geographic Information Technologies: Geographic information, location data, maps, GIS, and the importance of geographic information technologies for the real estate sector are explained.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Basics of Maps and Spatial Thinking: Scale, direction, coordinates, legend, symbols, layers, and spatial relationships are discussed at a basic level.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Concept of Geographic Information Systems: The components of GIS such as data, software, hardware, people, and methods, as well as its uses in the public and private sectors, are explained.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Types of Spatial Data: Vector data, raster data, points, lines, polygons, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, and parcel data are introduced with examples.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Coordinate Systems and Location Information: Latitude-longitude, projection, coordinate systems, GPS, and the relationship between address and location are explained through real estate applications.
Week 6 - Theoretical
GIS Software and Web Maps: QGIS, ArcGIS, Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, web maps, mobile mapping applications, and online parcel query tools are introduced.
Week 7 - Practice
Basic Map Reading Practice: Students are asked to interpret basic spatial information through a sample map, parcel query, or location data.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Use of GIS in the Real Estate Sector: Applications such as portfolio mapping, matching customer demands by location, neighborhood analysis, accessibility to transportation and amenities are discussed.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Use of Land Registry, Cadastre, and Zoning Data on Maps: The relationship between block, parcel, zoning status, construction conditions, plan decisions, ownership information, and maps is explained.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Location Analysis and Proximity Analysis: The effects of proximity to schools, hospitals, roads, public transport, parks, commercial areas, and public services on real estate value are examined.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Thematic Maps and Real Estate Analysis: The logic of preparing thematic maps using data such as population, income level, rental values, sales prices, building age, and land-use types is explained.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Remote Sensing and Image Data: Satellite images, aerial photographs, land use, changes in built-up areas, and monitoring urban development are discussed at a basic level.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Digital Maps, Mobile Applications, and Artificial Intelligence: Mobile mapping applications, field data collection, AI-supported location analysis, automatic reporting, and decision-support systems are introduced.
Week 14 - Theoretical
General Review and Practical Real Estate Mapping Study: The semester topics are reviewed; students are asked to prepare a simple real estate map using sample portfolios, parcels, or neighborhood data.
