Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to relate map reading, scale, coordinates, parcels, sketches, and basic surveying knowledge to real estate transactions.

Course Content

The course covers map types, map reading, scale, distance and area calculations, coordinates, GPS, cadastral maps, parcel information, surveying instruments, land surveying, sketches, site plans, and setting-out procedures.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical
Introduction to Map and Surveying Knowledge: The concepts of maps, surveying, land, parcels, location, and the importance of map and surveying knowledge for the real estate sector are explained.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Concept of Map and Types of Maps: Physical maps, political maps, cadastral maps, zoning plans, thematic maps, and digital maps are introduced.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Basics of Map Reading: Scale, direction, north arrow, legend, symbols, colors, lines, and basic representations on maps are explained.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Scale and Distance Calculations: Map scale, real distance, map distance, area calculation logic, and their importance in real estate practices are discussed.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Coordinates and Location Information: Latitude, longitude, coordinate systems, point location, GPS, and the relationship between address and location are explained at a basic level.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Cadastral Maps and Parcel Information: Block, parcel, map sheet, boundary, area, parcel corner points, and the role of cadastral maps in real estate transactions are explained.
Week 7 - Practice
Map Reading Practice: Students are asked to interpret basic map information using a sample cadastral map, zoning plan, or parcel sketch.
Week 8 - Theoretical
Basic Surveying Instruments and Methods: Tape measures, laser meters, levels, total stations, GPS/GNSS devices, and basic land surveying methods are introduced.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Land Surveying and Fieldwork: Point determination, distance measurement, slope, elevation difference, boundary control, and field note-taking are discussed.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Sketches, Site Plans, and Referenced Sketches: Simple sketch drawing, building-parcel relationship, site plans, reference points, and sketch-reading skills in real estate are explained.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Setting Out and Boundary Determination: Applying parcel boundaries on the ground, setting-out sketches, boundary disputes, and issues that real estate agents should consider are explained.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Relationship Between Zoning Plans, Cadastre, and Surveying: The map and surveying dimensions of cadastral parcels, zoning parcels, roads, dedications, subdivisions, consolidations, and parceling are discussed.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Use of Digital Maps and Surveying Data: Geographic information systems, web maps, mobile mapping applications, parcel queries, and digital surveying data are introduced.
Week 14 - Theoretical
General Review and Practical Parcel Examination: The semester topics are reviewed; students are asked to make a short evaluation of a sample parcel in terms of map, coordinates, boundaries, area, and real estate value.
