Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to equip students with the competence to formulate cosmetic products using natural ingredients. Students will be introduced to plant-based and naturally sourced raw materials and will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to develop safe and effective products suitable for different skin types. The course focuses on the formulation of basic cosmetic products (such as toners, serums, creams, balms) based on scientific principles. In addition, hygiene, preservative use, labeling, and regulatory information related to natural cosmetic production will be covered.

Course Content

This course aims to introduce the fundamental components of natural cosmetic products and enable students to safely and effectively develop their own formulations by combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills.

Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Introduction and Key Concepts: Definition of natural cosmetics, traditional vs modern cosmetics, role of natural cosmetics in the industry
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Natural Raw Materials Used in Cosmetics: Plant oils, essential oils, types of clay, hydrosols, beeswax, examples of certified natural ingredients
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Skin Types and Product Selection: Skin type analysis (dry, oily, combination, sensitive), matching the right ingredients to the right skin type
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Hygiene, Safety, and Production Environment: Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), hygiene rules during production, preservatives and shelf life
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Basic Water-Based Product Formulation: Toners, mists, hydrosol-based sprays, working with the water phase, making an herbal toner (practical)
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Oil-Based Product Formulation: Carrier oils and oil balance, making serum, hair oil, body oil, formulating a face serum suitable for skin types
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Emulsions – Cream and Lotion Basics: What are emulsifying agents? Oil-to-water ratio, making a simple hand cream (practical)
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Midterm Exam: Natural Preservatives and Shelf Life, Necessity of preservatives, examples of natural preservatives
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Natural Masks and Peeling Products: Clay masks, fruit acids, differences between physical and chemical peels, making two types of masks
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Lip and Body Products: Lip balm, body scrub, working with beeswax, making shea butter lip balm (practical)
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Soaps and Cleansers: Introduction to natural soap making (cold process), what is Castile soap? Producing a facial cleanser with soap base
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Basics of Aromatherapy and Essential Oils: Effects of essential oils, safe usage and dosage, making an aromatherapeutic roll-on (practical)
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Labeling, Certification, and Legal Regulations: Labeling requirements for cosmetic products, natural and organic certifications (COSMOS, ECOCERT, etc.), what is a safety assessment?
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Student Project Workshop Students design their own formulations, create product labels and packaging suggestions, and prepare for presentation
