Objectives of the Course

To deepen the theoretical knowledge acquired by Child Development associate degree students in the Special Education I course, enabling them to focus on the educational processes of children with special needs. Within the scope of this course, it is aimed for students to theoretically comprehend the educational strategies for different disability groups (intellectual, hearing, visual, autism, ADHD, etc.) and gifted children during early childhood and preschool periods, as well as inclusive education practices, family training models, social attitudes, and interdisciplinary teamwork methods.

Course Content

Educational principles and methods for children with atypical development; special education interventions in early childhood; educational strategies for children with intellectual, hearing, and visual impairments, speech and language disorders, specific learning difficulties, emotional and behavioral disorders, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and special talents; inclusive education practices in preschool; family training and counseling in special education; social and institutional attitudes towards special education, alongside interdisciplinary teamwork and collaboration models in special education processes.

2.Defines the importance of special education in early childhood and preschool periods, inclusive education models, and in-class theoretical adaptation processes.
3.Knows the principles of family education, family involvement models, and collaboration methods in special education processes.
4.Analyzes social, cultural, and institutional attitudes towards children with special needs and their education, and discusses ways to develop positive attitudes.
5.Explains the importance of multidisciplinary teamwork, employees' job descriptions, and professional/ethical collaboration in special education practices at a conceptual level.

Week 1 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Intellectual Disabilities: Educational approaches, instructional adaptations, and fostering basic skills in the preschool period.
Week 2 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Hearing Impairments: Communication methods (total communication, natural auditory-verbal approach) and educational environment arrangements.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Visual Impairments: Early educational interventions, independent movement, and tactile/auditory teaching strategies.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Special Education in Early Childhood: Early intervention programs, principles and legal foundations of special education in the preschool period.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Speech and Language Disorders: A theoretical overview of speech and language therapy, in-class alternative and augmentative communication methods.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Specific Learning Difficulties: Supporting academic skills, teaching learning strategies, and theoretical intervention models.
Week 7 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders: Positive behavioral support processes, behavior modification techniques, and theoretical approaches.

MIDTERM EXAM & Education of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Theoretical educational models (ABA, TEACCH, etc.) and structured educational environments.
Week 9 - Theoretical
Education of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): Classroom management strategies, theoretical approaches to enhancing attention and reducing impulsivity.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Education of Gifted and Talented Children: Curriculum differentiation models (enrichment, acceleration), and strategies for supporting creativity.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Inclusive Education: Enhancing social acceptance, peer support, and theoretical adaptation processes in preschool inclusive education environments.
Week 12 - Theoretical
Family Education: Planning and implementing family education programs in special education, family counseling, and collaboration models.
Week 13 - Theoretical
Attitudes in Special Education: Attitudes of society, teachers, families, and peers towards special education, and attitude modification strategies.
Week 14 - Theoretical
Teamwork and Collaboration in Special Education: Multidisciplinary team members (child developmentalist, RAM personnel, etc.), job descriptions, and professional ethical codes.
