Objectives of the Course

To enable Child Development associate degree students to comprehend the theoretical foundations, principles, and importance of developing educational toys and materials for children with special needs. Within the scope of this course, it is aimed for students to learn the selection, planning, and purchasing criteria of toys suitable for the developmental characteristics of different disability groups; to master the adaptation methods of waste materials, stuffed toys, puppets, literacy, rhythm, science-nature tools, and costume designs in special education; and to acquire the skills to theoretically analyze creativity, quality, and safety standards in material development processes.

Course Content

The concept of toys and materials in special education; the historical development of toys and their impacts on child development; toy selection and material adaptation dynamics according to disability groups (intellectual, hearing, visual, autism spectrum disorder, etc.); definition and planning steps of educational toys; the role of the teacher in material design; creativity in toy making and the use of waste materials; literacy support tools; theoretical analysis of storytelling techniques and rhythm tools; tools and equipment used in science and nature activities; design principles of stuffed toys and puppets; the place of educational costumes, headpieces, accessories, and mobiles in special education, alongside occupational health, safety, quality processes, and technology integration.

Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Course Introduction and Organization: Course content, basic philosophy of material development in special education, scope, and introduction of resources.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Development and Toys: Definition and functions of toys for children with special needs, their impacts on all developmental domains of children, and the historical development of toys.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Toy Selection According to Disability Groups: The importance of toys in the lives of individuals with special needs, and criteria for toys and play materials for each disability group.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Educational Toy Theory: Definition, place, and importance of educational toys in the development of individuals with special needs, and educational toy approaches across different disability groups.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Principles of Educational Toy Planning: Points to consider when preparing and purchasing educational toys; planning steps and the role of the teacher.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
Creativity and Waste Materials: The importance of creative learning in toy design for disability groups, and theoretical transformation processes of residual/waste materials.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Literacy Support Tools-I: Theoretical design of pre-literacy preparation tools for children with early literacy needs, dyslexia, and intellectual disabilities.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
MIDTERM EXAM & Literacy Support Tools-II: Theoretical analysis of alternative and augmentative literacy materials, and letter-sound awareness cards.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Language and Rhythm Tools: Storytelling techniques supporting language development, the function and design of rhythm tools and percussion materials in special education.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Science and Nature Education Tools: Adaptation of sensory bins, observation tools, and laboratory materials to be used in science and nature activities within special education.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Stuffed Toys: Characteristics of stuffed toys (fabric, socks, etc.), pattern preparation, material selection safe for child health, and theoretical design stages.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Puppets: The place of hand, finger, string, and shadow puppets in language, social, and emotional development; puppet design and usage methods in special education.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Educational Toy Designs: Theoretical analysis of educational toy models and manipulative materials aimed at teaching concepts, colors, shapes, and numbers.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Costumes, Headpieces, Accessories, and Mobiles: Costume/accessory design for dramatic play centers, the use of mobiles as visual/auditory stimuli in special education, occupational health, and information technology integration.
