Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to convey the adaptation, orientation, and readiness dimensions of children during their transition to preschool and primary school; and to provide students with the competence to prepare children for primary school through family involvement and original program designs by practically introducing early literacy components, approaches, and reading-writing readiness studies.

Course Content

Starting preschool and primary school, orientation models, and school adaptation processes; elements of primary school readiness; components of early literacy (print awareness, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, vocabulary); initial reading-writing teaching methods and preparation studies; digital literacy, family literacy, and programs for developing a love of reading; integration of the transition to primary school in the Century of Türkiye Education Model.

Learning Outcomes
1.Explains the adaptation, orientation, and readiness processes of children during the preschool and starting primary school periods, and stakeholder roles affecting these processes.
2.Analyzes components of early literacy (print awareness, phonological awareness, vocabulary) within theoretical and practical dimensions.
3.Designs line, perception, visual, and auditory reading-writing readiness activities appropriate for the preschool period, considering the initial reading-writing methods used in primary school.
4.Develops family literacy programs including interactive book reading techniques to support children's language development and love of reading in the home environment.
5.Structures holistic primary school preparation programs accommodating digital literacy tools and early intervention strategies in accordance with the transition goals of the Century of Türkiye Education Model.

Week 2 - Theoretical
Stakeholder Relationships in School Adaptation: The Role of Peer Relationships, Teacher Approaches, and School-Family Cooperation Strategies in the Adaptation Process.
Week 3 - Theoretical
Readiness and Adaptation for Primary School: Dimensions of Readiness (Physical, Cognitive, Social-Emotional, Language) and School Maturity Scales.
Week 4 - Theoretical
Early Literacy Education: Definition, Historical Development, Differences Between Early Literacy and Traditional Reading-Writing, and Its Importance.
Week 5 - Theoretical
Components of Early Literacy I: Receptive and Expressive Language Skills, Vocabulary, and the Role of Oral Language Development.
Week 6 - Theoretical
Components of Early Literacy II: Print Awareness (Book Structure, Direction of Print) and Alphabet Knowledge/Alphabetic Principle.

Components of Early Literacy III: Phonological Awareness (Rhyme Perception, Syllabification, Noticing Phonemic Changes).
Week 8 - Theoretical
Approaches to Early Literacy: Phylogenetic Approach, Emergent Literacy, and Social Constructivist Approaches.

Initial Reading-Writing Teaching Methods Implemented in Primary School: Sound-Based Sentence Method and the Relationship of Other Methods with Early Literacy.
Week 10 - Theoretical
Reading and Writing Preparation Studies: Visual and Auditory Perception Studies, Line Drawings, Attention and Memory Exercises.
Week 11 - Theoretical
Digital Literacy and Early Childhood: E-Books, Interactive Language Applications, and the Effects of Multimedia Tools on Language Development.

Risk Factors and Early Intervention in Early Literacy: Early Signs of Learning Disabilities (Dyslexia, etc.) and Supportive Techniques.
