Objectives of the Course

To enable Child Development associate degree students to comprehend the theoretical foundations, importance, and developmental impacts of nature education and outdoor pedagogy in early childhood. Within the scope of this course, it is aimed for students to recognize nature-based educational approaches; to learn methods for integrating outdoor learning environments and natural materials into the preschool curriculum; to master the principles of science education in nature, environmental awareness, sustainability, and risk management; and to acquire the skills to theoretically plan nature-based activities, ensure family participation, and present their work.

Course Content

The concept of nature education, its historical development, and its importance; the interaction between early childhood developmental domains and nature; nature-based educational approaches such as forest schools, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia; the relationship between nature and outdoor play; pedagogical design of outdoor learning environments; the use of natural materials in educational environments and activities; principles of preparing nature-based activity plans; theoretical foundations of science education practices in nature; environmental literacy, eco-philosophy, and sustainability; occupational health, safety, and risk management in the outdoors; family participation strategies in nature education; planning methodology of nature trips and field studies; and the theoretical presentation and evaluation processes of nature-oriented projects.

1.Explains the conceptual framework of nature education in early childhood, current global nature-based educational models, and their developmental benefits.
2.Analyzes outdoor learning environments and natural materials based on pedagogical principles in accordance with children's developmental needs.
3.Knows the theoretical planning and implementation strategies of activities focused on nature, science, environmental awareness, and sustainability for preschool children.
4.Theoretically defines occupational health and safety rules, risk assessment, and risk management stages in educational processes to be carried out in nature.
5.Acts in accordance with scientific, professional, and ethical rules during the stages of planning, family/field integration, and presentation of nature-oriented educational studies.

Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
Course Introduction and the Concept of Nature Education: Purpose of the course, historical development of nature education, basic concepts, and foundations of outdoor pedagogy.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Early Childhood Developmental Characteristics and Nature: Theoretical impacts of nature on children's motor, cognitive, language, social-emotional development, and well-being.
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Nature-Based Educational Approaches: The place of nature and environment in Forest Schools, Waldorf, and Reggio Emilia approaches, alongside their theoretical analysis.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
The Relationship Between Nature and Play: Characteristics of outdoor games, free play in nature, the concept of risky play, and the interaction of play with developmental domains.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Arrangement of Outdoor Learning Environments: Design of schoolyards and natural playgrounds according to pedagogical criteria, and physical environment analysis.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
The Use of Natural Materials in Education: The impact of unstructured, open-ended natural materials (stones, wood, water, soil, etc.) on educational processes and creativity.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Nature-Based Activity Planning: Methods for preparing nature-oriented activity plans compatible with the early childhood curriculum, and the selection of goals, objectives, and indicators.

MIDTERM EXAM & Midterm Evaluation of Nature Education: Evaluation of theoretical approaches from the first half of the semester and control of fundamental concepts.
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Nature and Science Education: Function of science and nature corners in natural settings, methods of observation, experimentation, and discovery, alongside the cultivation of scientific process skills.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Environmental Awareness and Sustainability: Theoretical foundations of early childhood environmental literacy, recycling, climate awareness, eco-philosophy, and sustainable living education.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
Safety and Risk Management in Nature: Occupational health and safety in outdoor activities, risk analysis for getting lost/injured, emergency planning, and legal responsibilities.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Family Participation and Nature Education: Planning family participation activities in nature, environmental awareness guidance for families, and school-family-community collaboration.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Nature Trips and Field Studies: Planning outdoor trips to botanical gardens, parks, and forested areas, alongside permit processes and theoretical preparation stages.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Student Presentations: Theoretical presentation of nature-based activity and project designs prepared throughout the semester, peer evaluation, and analysis of quality processes.
