Objectives of the Course

The objective of this course is to emphasize the importance of recreational activities in child development and to provide students with the skills to design, manage, and implement safe, educational, and entertaining recreational areas and play programs tailored to children's age, development, and special needs.

Course Content

This course covers the concept of recreation and its relationship with child development, structural and safety characteristics of play and recreational areas, indoor and outdoor playground design, management of children's clubs in thematic areas such as hospitals, hotels, and shopping malls, animation and event planning, and inclusive recreational practices for children with special needs.

Weekly Detailed Course Contents
Week 1 - Theoretical & Practice
What is recreation? The relationship between leisure, play, and recreation. The role and importance of recreation in child development.
Week 2 - Theoretical & Practice
Leisure habits of children from past to present. Digitalization and children's disconnection from outdoor activities in the modern world (Nature Deficit Disorder).
Week 3 - Theoretical & Practice
Recreational needs of infants, early childhood, and school-age children. Types of activities and material selection suitable for different age groups.
Week 4 - Theoretical & Practice
Playgrounds, thematic parks, adventure parks, and botanical gardens. Creating playgrounds with natural materials and the "Play in Nature" philosophy.
Week 5 - Theoretical & Practice
Design of shopping malls, playbarns, daycare, and kindergarten playrooms. Space management in indoor areas and child-friendly architecture.
Week 6 - Theoretical & Practice
International and national safety standards (TS EN 1176 and 1177 series). Flooring materials, toy safety, first aid, and emergency planning.
Week 7 - Theoretical & Practice
Structure and operation of "Mini Clubs" in hotels and holiday resorts. Children's animation, face painting, mini disco, and drama-based recreational programs.
Week 8 - Theoretical & Practice
Behavioral patterns exhibited by children in recreational areas, peer conflicts, and resolution strategies. Methods for developing positive behavior during leisure activities. (Midterm exam.)
Week 9 - Theoretical & Practice
Adaptation of recreational areas for children with physical, mental, or sensory differences. Barrier-free playgrounds and inclusive activity design.
Week 10 - Theoretical & Practice
Children's play areas in hospitals. Recreational activities supporting the morale, motivation, and development of hospitalized children or those with chronic illnesses.
Week 11 - Theoretical & Practice
How to organize a children's festival, workshop, or birthday party? Budget, time, material, and personnel management.
Week 12 - Theoretical & Practice
Children's museums, science centers, libraries, and art workshops. The impact of cultural recreation on children's aesthetic and creative perception.
Week 13 - Theoretical & Practice
Presentation of "My Dream Safe and Inclusive Children's Playground" projects prepared by students.
Week 14 - Theoretical & Practice
Completion of project presentations, feedback delivery, and a general review of the topics covered throughout the semester.
