This course aims to raise awareness about biodiversity conservation, environmental sustainability, and the impacts of human activities on biological systems. Students gain knowledge about factors threatening natural ecosystems and develop an understanding of the importance of conserving biodiversity and natural resources for future generations.
The course covers environmental concepts and terminology, the origins of conservation biology, biodiversity measurement, ecological, economic and ethical values of biological resources, threats to biodiversity (extinction, habitat destruction, climate change, overexploitation, invasive species and diseases), the IUCN Red List, genetic foundations of conservation biology, conservation strategies, species and population conservation, habitat and ecosystem management, protected areas, ex situ conservation approaches, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development principles.
