Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the historical development, core concepts, structural and technical features, and socio-economic dynamics of new media from an interdisciplinary and critical perspective. It also seeks to provide a conceptual framework through which students can evaluate digital platforms, algorithmic processes, new media literacy, ethical and legal issues, and transformations driven by artificial intelligence at a foundational level.

Course Content

The course covers the definition and historical development of new media, digitization, convergence, the network society, hypertext, interactivity, multimedia, platformization, algorithms, social media, participatory culture, digital identity, digital labor, surveillance and privacy, digital inequality, disinformation, ethics, copyright, and artificial intelligence. Theoretical frameworks are discussed through current examples from digital platforms.
