Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to examine the effects of digital technologies on social structure, culture, identity, public space, and communication practices within the context of new media and communication studies. Topics covered will include digital society, network society, platformization, data-driven communication, algorithms, online communities, digital inequality, privacy, surveillance, digital citizenship, participation, disinformation, and artificial intelligence. The course aims to enable students to critically analyze digital communication processes from social, cultural, economic, political, and ethical perspectives, and to develop research and communication projects addressing current issues in digital society.

Course Content

The concepts of digital society and network society, the effects of digitalization on social transformation, platforming, algorithmic communication, data society, digital culture, digital identity and self-presentation, online communities, digital public sphere, digital citizenship and participation, surveillance and privacy, digital inequality, accessibility, inclusivity, disinformation, platform responsibility, artificial intelligence and communication, digital ethics, digital field observation, and digital society research.

4.It collects and interprets data on communication practices within online communities or platforms through digital field observation.
5.They create and present research or communication projects on the digital society and communication field, while adhering to ethical principles.
