Objectives of the Course

The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the learning theories that form the basis of mathematics education and to develop the ability to apply appropriate methods and techniques for teaching fundamental mathematical concepts in early childhood education.

Course Content

This course addresses the role and importance of mathematical thinking in early childhood education. It examines the relationship between mathematics and variables such as intelligence, gender, and societal values. The course discusses the development of mathematical thinking in early childhood and explores different approaches that support this development. Fundamental instructional principles in teaching mathematical concepts and the notion of intuitive mathematics are introduced. Key mathematical concepts targeted in early childhood (e.g., counting, quantity, operations with natural numbers, measurement, basic geometric shapes) are examined, and activity examples related to these concepts are developed.
