The aim of this course is to equip pre-service early childhood teachers with the theoretical foundations and practical approaches of interactive book reading. Teacher candidates will learn how to actively engage children in the reading process in ways that support their language, cognitive, and social development, and will gain the skills to develop effective reading strategies throughout this process.
Definition and key characteristics of interactive book reading, selection of developmentally appropriate books for early childhood, techniques for initiating, maintaining, and extending conversations during reading, planning of pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading activities, the relationship between early literacy development and interactive book reading, design and implementation of interactive book reading sessions, suggestions for family involvement and interactive book reading at home.
