Objectives of the Course

This course aims to enable students to comprehend the relationship between media and politics within a historical and theoretical framework, and to critically evaluate the functioning of mass media in the context of communication theories and media literacy. It also aims to develop students' ability to analyze media content by addressing contemporary issues such as propaganda, fact-checking, gender, and violence.

Course Content

History of communication and media; concepts of communication and political communication; mass communication theories (liberal and critical approaches); theoretical contributions of Habermas, Gramsci, and Chomsky; political economy of media in Turkey; analysis of topics such as media and violence, media and gender roles, media and children; media, public opinion, international relations, and media and propaganda.

1.Acquires fundamental knowledge of media literacy and critically evaluates media content.
2.Gains knowledge about propaganda and black propaganda concepts.
3.Recognizes and differentiates the major theoretical approaches in media studies.
4.Explains the historical development and functions of mass communication tools.
5.Conducts research on the relationship between media and politics and presents findings.
6.Understand how media influence social, political and cultural relations in international, national and individual spheres.
7.Gains knowledge about accessing accurate news, utilizing first sources, and verification methods.
