Objectives of the Course

This course aims to enable students to comprehend current developments in Turkish foreign policy, analyze Turkey’s new openings towards various regions and countries, and critically assess Turkish foreign policy from an international relations perspective. It also aims to improve students’ research, reporting, and presentation skills.

Course Content

Basic concepts, institutions, and decision-makers in Turkish foreign policy; methods used in foreign policy analysis; Turkey’s new regional openings and current foreign policy issues; general evaluation of Turkish foreign policy in the light of contemporary developments and future perspectives; research and presentation projects.

1.Discusses the basic discourses and conceptual framework, changes, and continuities in Turkish foreign policy during the 1990s and 2000s.
2.Explains the main principles and major issues in Turkish foreign policy in the post-Cold War era.
3.Understands the interests and positions of key actors shaping Turkish foreign policy.
4.Analyzes how the basic theories of the discipline of international relations are applied in Turkish foreign policy.
5.Evaluates the impact of contemporary international developments on Turkish foreign policy.
6.Analyzes new regional openings and current issues in Turkish foreign policy.
7.Draws conclusions regarding the future perspectives of Turkish foreign policy.
8.Conducts research on a specific current topic individually or as part of a group and presents the findings in written and oral forms.
