The aim of this course is to provide students with a historical and analytical understanding of the modernization process, political structures, social dynamics, and regional crises of the Middle East. The course will cover key issues such as the emergence of the modern Middle East, national movements, regional conflicts, and the strategic importance of energy and water resources. Students will develop the ability to evaluate developments in the region within their historical context and to analyze them through a critical perspective.
This course examines the modernization process of the Middle East, interwar developments, the establishment of Israel and the Palestinian issue, the rise of Arab nationalism, the Arab-Israeli wars, and the Iranian Revolution from a historical perspective. It further explores post-Cold War transformations and developments in the Middle East during the 2000s, the effects of the Arab Spring, Israel’s security policies, and regional issues concerning religion, energy, and water. Students will acquire the skills necessary to analytically assess political, social, and economic developments in the region.
